Formula 1 has announced its first investment in sustainable aviation fuel (SAF) as part of its highly efficient logistical strategy and adherence to reaching zero zero by 2030. The first phase of investment focuses on the purchases of SAF through the DHL global partner for air cargo to and from flight races since the Australian award in March approximately 20 % of maturity tries Next.
The use of SAF provides an estimated 80 % decrease in its associated carbon emissions on each flight, which means that the flights covered by SAF in the 2024 season can provide more than 4,500 TCO2E (tons of carbon dioxide), compared to the use of traditional aviation fuel.
In this first phase of investment, Formula 1 purchases SAF using a recognized “book and claim” form through the Googreen Plus service from DHL. With the expansion of the SAF sector and infrastructure, the charging aircraft used directly to move the F1 can not be hired with a ship with SAF. Instead, DHL enabled the F1 to “book” the required fuel, which is then added to the supply chain in other aircraft where SAF is available directly. This guarantees a high level of the product quality and follows it, while checking all carbon discounts before the F1 can “claim” it in the carbon fingerprint. This model helps reduce carbon emissions with current SAF sizes and encourages market growth in the future.
SAF is the latest example of the continuous F1 transition to sustainable fuel via sports and its processes. From 2026, F1 cars will be operated on sustainable fuel by 100 %, while F2 and F3 will reach this standard by the next season, which has reached 55 % since the beginning of 2023, and FIA safety and medical cars are currently 40 % of sustainable fuel. Grands Prix is delivered in Europe using biofuel trucks, as well as events throughout the calendar using alternative energy solutions, such as biofuels. From the next season, F1 will also operate the main operating areas of all Prix Grands European, such as PIT Lane and Paddock, using a low -carbon energy solution provided by AGGREKO, which reduces emissions in areas that have been provided with more than 90 %.
Ellen Jones, ESG president, Formula 1 said: “Formula 1 has always been at the forefront of innovation, and our investment in the early stage in sustainable aviation fuel is a testimony to our dedication to providing our net commitment by 2030. SAF is just a newer step for businessmen, and confirms how the alternative fuel inside and outside the path can reduce material carbon emissions. This delivery is not provided to our sustainability strategy except through coordinated procedures via Our sport.
Paul Fowler, President of Motorsports Logistics, DHL: “Our long partnership with Formula 1 is based on a common passion for innovation and excellence. We are committed to using our expertise to transport Formula 1 car around the world in the most efficient way. With 40 years of experience in Motorsports Logistics, we focus on reducing greenhouse gas emissions and making motorsport more sustainable with every step we take.”
