United Airlines said on Friday that it canceled 35 back and forth flights from Newark Liberty International Airport daily after moving from air traffic monitors.
“It is disappointing to make further cuts in a reducing schedule in Newark, but due to the lack of a way to solve structural employment issues in the federal aviation administration close to the range, we feel that there is no other option to protect our customers,” Scott Kirby, CEO of United in a letter to customers on Friday.
Discounts represent 10 % of daily flights in United from Newark and will start this week.
Kirby said that technology issues in Newark during the past few days have already caused flight disturbances, but these disturbances were exacerbated when 20 % of Niger air traffic watchers came out from the job.
He added that the Federal Aviation Administration said that Newark cannot deal with the number of aircraft to operate in the coming weeks and months. FAA consultant said that Newark faces delays due to employment issues. Kirby said the facility “suffers from a shortage of employees for years.”
According to the flight tracking site, 34 % of flights are currently delayed from Newark.
FAA did not immediately respond to the comment. The National Air traffic monitors Association rejected the comment.
United wants the restrictions of the openings in Newark
Kirby said that United was pressing the federal government to reduce the number of flights from Newark, and he asked for the restrictions of openings such as those at the Laddia and Rigan National Airport. Newark is one of the most crowded airports in the United States, and has often faced delays and disturbances as a result.
On Thursday, the Ministry of Transport provided a list of initiatives to repair the air traffic control system, which includes providing financial incentives to employ and train air traffic monitors.
The aviation industry faced the severe air observer deficiency, which was aggravated by the epidemic. Time -out technology has also become a concern after the regime was interrupted in the country in 2023.
United CEO said that he spoke with Transport Minister Sean Duffy on Friday and was happy with the Trump administration’s proposal to fill the shortage of air traffic controller.
The point did not immediately respond to a request for comment.
