American Airlines Cargo has announced a broad enhancement to its facility and digital capabilities at London Heathrow Airport (LHR), its largest operation in Europe.
The carrier has extensively expanded its facilities at LHR by moving to a new location. The move, adjacent to the previous two buildings, combines the carrier’s operations into one larger space for both imports and exports. The new facility provides more space and allows greater flexibility for its transportation and cargo handling subsidiary, Worldwide Flight Services (WFS).
The new building provides a total of 120,000 square feet, an increase of 15,000 square feet over the original combined facilities and nearly doubles the PMC pallet storage capacity. Floor and air-side doors, X-ray machines and construction stations are also being increased in the new building – all of which allow for faster acceptance and delivery as well as construction and deconstruction efforts.
In addition to the facility move, American also updated how it communicates operational updates digitally using WFS. This joint effort enables the creation of a new digital connection between the WFS system, CargoSpot and the US iCargo platform.
“The facility expansion is a major milestone for us in how we operate at LHR,” says Sam Mendenhall, vice president of operations for American Airlines Cargo. “We are confident that the move to a larger, more consistent shipping facility, coupled with the technology improvements with WFS, will unlock operational efficiencies and ultimately provide a better experience for our customers shipping in and out of LHR.”
American currently operates 20 wide-body flights daily from LHR to major U.S. hubs, with up to 26 flights daily during the summer peak season.
