Cargogate München Airport GmbH (Cargogate) was founded in 1974 and provides cargo services at Munich Airport as a wholly-owned subsidiary of Munich Airport. As an organizing agent, Cargogate carries out all tasks originating from the warehouse on an area of approximately 17,000 square metres, including acceptance, sorting, assembly and delivery of goods as well as customs and dangerous goods procedures. Cargogate has the necessary infrastructure to properly clear all types of special cargo.
In order to boost air freight at Munich Airport, CHI Aviation Handling GmbH, as part of the CHI Cargo Group, will acquire a 74.9 percent stake in Cargogate. Munich Airport retains the remaining 25.1 percent of the shares, thus establishing a future-oriented strategic partnership with proven cargo expertise and a large customer network.
The CHI Group already offers cargo shipping and airline handling services as well as other related activities at Frankfurt, Nuremberg, Hamburg and Amsterdam airports for companies operating internationally and is expanding its portfolio to include airline handling at Munich Airport.
The joint venture will continue to operate under its previous name until further notice. The common goal is sustainable development at Munich Airport and significantly enhance its cargo business and volume. The jobs of approximately 150 contractual employees have been secured. The acquisition of shares in January 2025 is subject to regulatory approval.
“I am delighted that we have been able to win a strong strategic partner in CHI for our cargo subsidiary Cargogate to jointly advance the cargo development at Munich Airport,” said Joost Lammers, CEO of Munich Airport.
“Through the joint venture with Munich Airport, one of the leading airports in Europe, we are strengthening the location and the German air cargo market as a whole with our scalable and proven operations in the field of cargo handling,” Kai Domscheit, Managing Director of CHI Aviation stated.
