Deutsche Aircraft has announced a partnership with Weerts Group, a European logistics and real estate infrastructure developer, to build the advanced Final Assembly Line (FAL) for the D328eco. This collaboration is a major breakthrough in the development of the D328eco program and reinforces Deutsche Aircraft’s commitment to innovation and sustainability.
The OEM started construction work for the final assembly line at Leipzig/Halle Airport in May 2023. The framework conditions have since been established and the official start of construction was announced during ILA 2024 in June. Meanwhile, the ground side has been completed and delivered. FAL is scheduled to become operational in the last quarter of 2025, with the Weerts Group undertaking construction work. With a total area of 60,500 square meters, the facility will house the FAL, flight readiness hangar, logistics center and administration building, creating a comprehensive infrastructure to support D328eco production.
The new final assembly line will incorporate the latest technologies and processes, ensuring a 100% digital and paperless production environment. Automated and driverless transportation systems will streamline operations, while warehousing of automated parts and tools will enhance efficiency. The production line will be specifically designed to fit the D328eco, optimizing process flows and using energy-efficient battery-powered tools.
One of the main advantages of the final assembly line will be its use of 3D models in production, and the possibility of integrating augmented reality technology. This innovative approach will enhance productivity and accuracy, strengthening Deutsche Aircraft’s position as a leader in the aviation industry.
In addition to its advanced technological capabilities, the final assembly line will prioritize sustainability and customer experience. Newly designed manufacturing tools, including fuselage tooling, will be energy efficient, contributing to a greener production process. The open and friendly factory will allow customers to witness aircraft assembly first-hand, enhancing transparency and trust.
The construction of the final assembly line will create employment opportunities for 250-350 individuals to boost the local economy in the Leipzig region. With a production capacity of forty-eight D328eco aircraft per year, Deutsche Aircraft aims to meet the growing demand for regional aircraft while maintaining the highest quality standards.
Nico Neumann, COO of Deutsche Aircraft, highlighted the importance of this collaboration, saying: “This partnership with the Weerts Group represents an important milestone in the manufacturing of the D328eco. The Weerts Group has strong experience in building the final assembly line for Deutsche Aircraft. Evidence of our dedication to the success of the D328eco program and its pivotal role in the aviation value chain in Europe and around the world.
“This partnership between Deutsche Aircraft, Leipzig Airport and our group is a milestone in our development in Germany,” said Yves Weerts, CEO and President of the Weerts Group. “The Weerts Group is impressed by the trust shown by Deutsche Aircraft and Sierra Nevada Corporation during the negotiations, and we are very pleased to contribute to making this a reality.” Project: This cooperation represents an absolute priority for our company, as Leipzig is an important connection point for the further development of our business in the German market.
Götz Ahlmann, CEO of Mitteldeutsche Flughafen AG, added: “Leipzig/Halle Airport is a model for successfully attracting companies and innovation. Producing an environmentally friendly aircraft like the D328eco fits perfectly into our portfolio. The establishment of this production line represents a pioneering chapter for sustainable aviation, our airport and the entire region.”
Deutsche Aircraft is excited to embark on this new chapter in its journey towards revolutionizing regional aviation. The collaboration with Weerts Group will enable the company to deliver on its promise of providing a modern, efficient and sustainable final assembly line for the D328eco. With its advanced technologies, enhanced operations and commitment to customer satisfaction, Deutsche Aircraft is poised to shape the future of regional air travel.
