IIn the first five weeks of this year, the giant cargo ship called “Beluga” will be a regular guest at Munich Airport.
The BelugaXL is based on the Airbus A330-200F. Its name is due to its whale-like appearance. Beluga mainly transports aircraft components between different Airbus sites. During the current display to guests at Munich Airport, Augsburg-manufactured A350 fuselage sections – known as “side shells” – are loaded onto transport aircraft using a specially made scaffold and then flown to the Airbus factory in Hamburg-Finkenwerder.
Thanks to its special shape, with a wingspan of about 61 meters and a height of about 20 metres, the BelugaXL is a real landmark for aviation enthusiasts. The loading of aircraft parts from Augsburg at Munich Airport underscores the importance of the Free State of Bavaria as a major location for air traffic and the aircraft industry.
Of interest to plane lovers: The BelugaXL is expected to make three more visits to the airport on January 23, 29 and 31, landing in Munich at midday and taking off for Hamburg in the afternoon.
