Steven Polmans, Managing Director of Azura International, is one of the most recognized figures in the global air freight industry. Now responsible for ACW, he shares his views on the importance of the 2025 ACW Air Cargo Awards to the success of the industry.
After significant consultation with stakeholders, the well-established awards system was taken in new directions. Here he talks to readers and air freight industry professionals about why the “Oscars” of the air freight industry are always so important.
ACW: In your opinion, what do companies/individuals gain from winning such awards?
B: Awards should be seen as legitimate, transparent and objective, similar to how we view elections in real life. Winning such an award provides credibility and visibility within the industry, enhancing the company’s reputation with customers and partners. Internally, it fosters team spirit and encourages departments to rally behind success. A company that wins an award is seen as the best in its category, and people will naturally want to be part of the winning team.
ACW: What do you think those who were nominated but did not win could be denied these awards?
B: Even if you don’t win, being nominated is an accomplishment in itself. Participation allows you to showcase your strengths, both internally and externally. Most importantly, feedback from jurors or industry can provide valuable insights into where to improve. It is an opportunity to improve your approach and better understand industry values, which can be crucial for future success.
ACW: What advice would you give to others who aspire to achieve success through the award?
“My advice is simple: enter! Entering helps you learn how to present your company in the best light possible. Focus on highlighting your strengths, be transparent, and stay true to what your company stands for. Additionally, prepare well by understanding the award criteria, and don’t be afraid to ask Comments for improvement.
ACW: How do you think winning an award can impact an organization or individual?
B: Winning an award enhances the credibility of the organization and motivates the entire team. It enhances a sense of pride within the company and can interest key stakeholders. Awards are often displayed proudly, showing that companies recognize their positive impact. They can also open doors to new business opportunities, as they confirm your position as an industry leader.
ACW: As a man with a background in air cargo, what are your personal thoughts on the awards? Have you ever entered?
B: Yes, I participated several times, and although I did not win every time, the satisfaction of winning the most prestigious and impartial awards was enormous. And very unexpected, so the sudden feeling is one I won’t forget quickly. It was especially rewarding to see how these accomplishments enhanced internal recognition for shipping products, from the communications department all the way up to the CEO. The win also strengthened relationships with our shipping stakeholders. I encourage everyone to consider participating, as the process itself provides valuable learning and insight.
