Swissport, a leading global provider of airport ground services and air cargo handling, has announced the launch of a brand-new cargo facility at London Heathrow Airport (LHR). This launch represents the significant growth achieved by Swissport in the freight sector, following a 17% increase in cargo tonnage during the year to date.

Strengthening its presence at one of the world’s busiest airports, Swissport is consolidating its continued expansion in the fast-growing air cargo market, with launches set to be announced at Gatwick and planned expansions at East Midlands, Manchester and Stansted airports.
“Our new facility at Heathrow Airport is the cornerstone of our global air cargo expansion strategy. It not only strengthens our service capabilities in a critical global hub, but also demonstrates our commitment to investing in infrastructure and technology to meet growing demands,” said Joe Belfield, Chief Operating Officer, Cargo. for the air freight industry.
The move to increase its footprint across the UK follows massive tonnage growth, largely driven by e-commerce imports.
“Looking to 2025 and beyond, we have confidence that these market trends will continue. That’s why we made a strategic decision to invest in this part of the business,” says Joe Belfield.
“Many customers are waiting to join the Swissport portfolio once we have space available, and we are delighted to be expanding into Gatwick, East Midlands, Manchester and Stansted in the months following our opening at Heathrow Airport today.”
Pharmaceuticals and perishable items have also increased demand for specialist handling solutions, and the Heathrow facility includes a dedicated border inspection center with spot assessment capabilities on the airside for imported goods.
Joe Belfield adds: “We are confident that this facility will play a key role in driving our continued growth in this important market segment, strengthening our position as a global leader in air cargo handling.”
The new facility includes 15,000 square feet of climate-controlled space, advanced warehouse management systems and real-time tracking capabilities. These developments will enable Swissport to handle more customers and meet additional demand.
