The system features ball conveyor units from UK-based Alwayse Ball Unit Solutions and was built by the company’s long-term partner, PERT Conveyor Company Ltd. It enables THAI Cargo’s ground operations team to maneuver unit load devices (ULDs) quickly, safely and easily. ) around the terminal’s 90,000 square meter warehouse, which accommodates more than 1.2 million tons of goods every year.
Installed in September 2024, the new cargo handling system features more than 1,600 spherical units from the company’s Heavy Duty 8006015 series installed as part of a 135 square meter spherical deck.
With a maximum payload of 1,000kg per ball transfer unit, each containing a 57.1mm diameter stainless steel bearing housed within a low-profile unit made up of a single steel structure, the new system provides the low-friction, multi-directional movement qualities needed to withstand the demands of heavy traffic. Inside the charging station. The system’s compatibility with ULD units also enables THAI Cargo to accommodate the transportation of pre-packaged goods sent onto the aircraft by import and export operators.
Dean Falconer, Head of Global Partnerships at Alwayse Ball Unit Solutions, commented: “Ball transfer units provide air cargo service providers with an unparalleled way to transport ULD units safely and efficiently to facilitate fast delivery times. Their low friction and multi-directional movement help reduce the amount of force needed for handling With ULD modules, reducing overall ground operations risks and making them safer for operators, all without additional power requirements.
“We are excited to see how the new system will help improve delivery times and improve operator safety over the coming months and years, while supporting THAI Cargo’s vision to become one of Asia’s leading integrated logistics hubs.”
Cam Baines, Export Sales Director at PERT Conveyor Company Ltd, added: “Always Ball Unit Solutions has become our preferred ball unit supplier, and the THAI Cargo system is the latest in a series of projects we have collaborated on over the years. Air cargo operators need systems Robust and reliable handling to reduce time on the ground, our rotating conveyor ball surfaces enable Thai freight operators to handle ULD units in a fast, safe and efficient manner.
