The pharmaceutical and medical device industries are booming in Ireland, creating a growing need for integrated, globally connected healthcare logistics services.
Ireland’s world-leading pharmaceutical market is now more reliant on advanced temperature-controlled logistics to help meet its needs. The industry already accounts for nearly 50% of the country’s exports1 The market is expected to achieve annual growth of 6.17% during the period from 2024 to 2028.
Against this backdrop, UPS Healthcare today announced the opening of the first healthcare logistics facility of its kind in Dublin. The €12 million investment covers approximately 6,000 square meters and has created 30 new jobs, demonstrating UPS’s support for the Irish market and export growth.
The facility houses small parcel, shipping, logistics and distribution capabilities, connecting customers from all industries to a truly integrated global network that is adaptable and flexible to their needs. UPS Healthcare is uniquely positioned to offer one of the broadest ranges of complex healthcare logistics services in the world.
80% of pharmaceutical products in Europe already require temperature-controlled transportation, and the latest biological products and specialty pharmaceuticals require precise, temperature-controlled logistics to get critical products to patients where they need them, at the right time and at the right temperature.
Equipped with specialist technology, the facility provides bespoke warehousing and inbound and outbound transportation for a range of pharmaceutical and health technology products, providing a one-stop solution for healthcare companies looking to streamline their supply chains for complex therapeutics.
“This investment represents our commitment to supporting Ireland’s world-leading pharmaceutical and medical device industries. We are the only provider that can take our clients’ treatments from clinical trials directly to the patient, turning logistics into a competitive advantage, an advantage that will only help grow Ireland’s position as a central hub for the pharmaceutical industry. Most importantly, we can give patients peace of mind knowing that their treatments and important health devices are in safe hands.” Cathy O’Brien, vice president of international sales at UPS Healthcare, said:
Last year, UPS introduced a new flight route between the US, Ireland and the UK to strengthen the transatlantic trade corridor – and Ireland’s links with its largest pharmaceutical export market. The flight serves Dublin and Stansted airports, and returns to UPS’s air hub in Louisville, US, carrying healthcare and small goods between the three countries.
“I would like to congratulate UPS Healthcare on the opening of its new facility in Dublin which will support Ireland’s thriving pharmaceutical and medical technology sector. With this €12 million investment, UPS Healthcare is demonstrating its commitment to innovation but also strengthening Ireland’s reputation as a leading center of excellence in the life sciences sector.”
In 2023, UPS Healthcare has doubled the space of our dedicated healthcare facilities since 2020. This new facility is connected to a global network of 17 million square feet (1.6 million square metres) of dedicated healthcare space that is CGMP compliant and output GDP, with an area of 10 million square feet (930,000 m2) dedicated to the cold chain.
